“There is a significant difference between a recording artist who does hip-hop and a genuine rapper,” according to a 2009 article from PrefixMag.com's Mike Burr. “General Steele, familiar as part of Smif-N-Wessun and the Boot Camp Clik, definitely falls into the 'rapper' category."
Brooklyn, New York, rapper General Steele released his new album, titled Amerikkka's Nightmare Part 2 - Children of War, on Feb. 23rd, just in time for Black History Month. This album came out on Bucktown USA/Duck Down Records.
The new album consists of 12 tracks and is the second installment in his Amerikkka’s Nightmare series, which began in 2004. The first volume consists of 19 tracks plus bonus acapellas. Both albums are politically-charged, full of thoughts on what's going on in America and on an international level.
“It is the people who live in this great country who have struggled relentlessly to establish this country under the basic common human & constitutional rights that all people should have,” General Steele told Nolan Strong in an article on AllHipHop.com.
Underground political Hip-Hop duo Dead Prez (Stic.man and M-1) feature on the song “Cry Freedom,” and the song “I Had A Vision” features rappers Akir, Hasaan Salaam, Hicoup, and Louie Skaggs. Rapper Flood Diesel aka Flatbush King features on the song “Tomorrow's Children,” and rapper Nicole Michelle features on the song “Pledge Allegiance.”
“Through freedom of speech, General Steele has converted his mode of expression into song found within the messages in Amerikkka's Nightmare Part 2 - Children of War. Tracks such as 'Cry Freedom' featuring Dead Prez resonate through the speakers as General Steele proclaims that whatever doesn't kill you only makes you more strong,” according to Matt Conaway of MAC Media.
A documentary created by Bucktown USA titled We The People features community activists and artists sharing their views on the USA’s present condition. A trailer can be viewed on Bucktown USA website at http://bucktownusa.com/2010/.
General Steele became a famous rapper in the underground Rap duo Smif-N-Wesson, once known as Cocoa Brovaz (www.myspace.com/smifnwessun), alongside rapper Tek. He also is a member of Brooklyn, NY’s Hip-Hop supergroup Boot Camp Clik (www.myspace.com/bootcampclik) with Buckshot and Heltah Skeltah aka Sean Price, along with the Originoo Gunn Clappaz (O.G.C.)—Louieville Sluggah, Top Dog (General Steele’s brother), and Starang Wondah. Rapper 5FT of the Hip-Hop group Black Moon is also featured on the album.
General Steele's debut solo album, Welcome to Bucktown, was released May 5th, 2009. The rapper explained to HipHopDX.com staff writer Sean Ryon on April 30th, 2009, that the album was "more than just an album or compilation," it was a soundtrack he worked on for five years that represented Brooklyn, NY. According to Ryon, General Steele was partially “inspired by the various themes of corruption and companionship that...pervade throughout the film Bucktown" and partially inspired by experiences throughout his life in his neighborhood in Brooklyn.
